Canakkale stands where Europe and Asia almost touch, on one of the world's most famous waterways. Across the strait, the Gallipoli peninsula preserves the memorials and battlefields of 1915, visited every year by travellers from around the world.
A short drive south lies Troy, the city of Homer's Iliad, with layers of settlement spanning thousands of years. Nearby, the Troad region continues to Assos and the olive-covered slopes of Mount Ida.
No visit to Troy is complete without the Troy Museum, opened in 2018 just outside the ancient site. Its galleries bring the story of the city to life, from the first settlements to the Roman era, with finds gathered from across the Troad.
